Dad just found this picture. There are two different ones. The other I’ll share later. It’s interesting though… This is about 11 x 15 inches. It was taken close to 8/1/67, because it says that on the envelope. The price was $12.61 !

You have to see this. We are preparing for Loretta’s cousin Nicole’s wedding and once again we are blessed with an opportunity to participate. Where’s the closest beauty pagent.

Elijah is doing fine, he’s able to put his hands on the wheel chair and lift himself up without pain. However, I’m relatively sure that my back is hurting more then his legs at this point! Have you ever tried to put a fifty pound sack of potatoes on the potty… well, you likely get the point.

Like having a whole staff of people to do everything for the patient!

It’s nice to be home though. Food, change position, play game, medicine, watch tv, rise and repeat….

That’s pretty much life right now. We’ll go back to see the doctor in a week or so and I’ll fill you in on more then. That concludes our broadcast day…. beeeeeeeeeppppp…… ( multi-color pattern on the screen )

Things have changed in the plans a bit. He is doing fine on the medicine by mouth and now we are just waiting for to relieve himself both ways to show he can. It could take all day, but once that’s done he is free to go.

We are skipping going to Shriner’s hospital. I’ll tell you why later if you ask. So if you were going to visit, you’ll have to come to our house tonight or tomorrow. I’ll leave the espresso on for ya. (in Tom Bodett voice – think Red Roof Inn)

The fever broke about 12 – 2AM this morning and he started to feel much better. He’s more awake today. Therapy came in to do some excercises and he’s able to move his legs as much as expected. He’s still on the pain medicine and he just has to press a button to get it.

In the meantime, he’s watching Gilligan’s Island and the Fliintstones.

We should have known better…

He definately has a fever, about 102 currently. It’s been on the rise since this morning. He complains mostly about the lower left leg cast. There may be an infection there.

The worst part is not the fact that he feels bad, but that they now want to take blood all the time. He’s not an easy stick (as they say). He really doesn’t like it and gets very upset.

How much will this help Elijah walk?

We won’t know for a while. We know that his hips will now have good positioning in his hip sockets and should keep him from having the pain that seemed definite if we didn’t do anything.

They just said they are moving us to a room. We should be on 10th Floor in the 2-3 PM range.

Elijah and I are watching the Wizard of OZ.

Blood pressure has been a little low and he threw up once. We are still in the PICU.

Sleeping well

Elijah is doing great… (for being sawed in half)
He is sleeping comfortably. He hasn’t needed any oxygen since they wheeled him out.
We’ve already got a glass and half of water down him and he’s asking for jello…. (he doesn’t even like jello! But I know, he knows, he has to have these things in order to get solid food)
I may or may not do more tonight. I have a couple more pictures to get up here though.

He’s out of surgery

They ended up rotating the top of each leg to get the knees out and hip in a better position.
Also, they rotated only one of the lower legs. We thought they’d do two. But, they believe the other didn’t need it currently.
He’s in and out of being awake. A little pain too, but doing very well.
He said he wished they’d put casts on because people won’t have room to sign it!

Surgery started

They just called and said he went to sleep fine. He had practiced with his mask, as you can see from the pictures to the left.
He was brave and just used the mask instead of one of the drugs that makes you loopy first.
They used fiber optics to guide the breathing tube.
He will have two fiberglass casts on lower legs. He picked red! His favorite color. They let you pick a flavor for your bathing mask too. He chose root beer. (if he would have picked just beer, I would have been worried.)

They called and said the top portion of the first leg is done. Going a little slower then expected. But fine.
My first update was delayed do to me using the wrong email address. Ooops. Sorry. Hope you liked the pictures though.

Elijah’s Operation

The next operation is July 31st. We arrive at 6 AM (5 hr operation, but add a couple hours to each side before we see him again)
They will rotate the bone close to the hip on each leg to bring the knees out more.
Also, the large bone in the lower leg will be rotated to bring the feet more inward.
Thank you for your prayers.

If you go back through this blog you can see the other operations he’s had and pictures. Most of you know that at 2 1/2 years old he was paralyzed from the chest down and the miracle that it’s been for him to be able to walk at all.

I’ll update everyone here, instead of email. Likely times of update 9AM, 12PM, 3PM, 6PM.

Talk about happy… Elijah won a contest to be one of nine kids out on the field to meet the team. Elijah got his Fredbird signed by Fredbird and his baseball signed by Aaron Miles. There was a number of people that were surprised when they were there and hear Elijah annouced over the loud speaker as the new Short Stop!
